18-year-old Indian trailblazer Shafali Verma will lead Team India to the inaugural Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup in South Africa early next year. Shweta Sehrawat was made Verma's deputy.
19-year-old senior women's team wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, who played 25 T20Is and 17 ODIs, was also selected for the 15-man squad.
India are placed in Group D alongside South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Scotland. The top three teams in each group will advance to the Super Six Round, where teams will be drawn into two groups of six. The top two teams in each group will then advance to the semi-finals, to be played on 27 January at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom. The final will take place at the same venue on 29 January.
Placed in Group D, India will face Scotland, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the group stage.
India meets South Africa in their tournament opener on January 14. The Women in Blue meet the United Arab Emirates on January 16 and Scotland on January 18. The historic event will feature the game's future stars with 16 teams traveling to South Africa to compete in 41 matches at Benoni and Potchefstroom from January 14-29, 2023.
