Bangladesh on Friday named batsman Liton Das as captain for their one-day international series against India starting this weekend, replacing the injured Tamim Iqbal. The three-match series kicks off in Dhaka on Sunday, with the tourists also playing two tests during their month-long visit. Regular captain Tamim was ruled out of the ODI series after suffering a groin injury during a training game in the capital on Wednesday. He is also doubtful for the Test series, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said in a statement.
Das, 28, has been a solid run scorer since his debut in 2015 but has never led Bangladesh in the 50-over format or on tests.
His only experience as a national team captain came during a Twenty20 game against New Zealand last year.
“Liton is one of the more experienced players on the team and has shown leadership qualities. He has a sharp mind for cricket and reads the game well," said Jalal Yunus, head of cricket operations at BCB.
But Yunus added that the team would lack Tamim's leadership on the tour.
"Under his captaincy the team has played excellent cricket in recent years, and he has been our most prolific batsman in this format," he said.
"He will be missed but we also believe Liton has the qualities to do a good job as captain."
India arrived in Bangladesh on Thursday for their first tour since 2015.
The first two ODIs will be held in Dhaka on December 4 and 7, while the third will be held in Chittagong on December 10, after which the two teams will play a test in each city.
