In preparation for this year's World Cup in India, Pakistan and New Zealand will play each other in the first of three one-day internationals on Monday in Karachi. A miserable season for both teams came to an end when the previous Test series between the two teams ended without a result in either of the two Tests, which were both played in Karachi. Four of the eight tests, including their first-ever 3-0 whitewash by England, were lost by Pakistan, who failed to win any of their three Test series played at home. Additionally, none of New Zealand's previous six Test matches have they won.
However, Babar Azam is certain that his team will succeed in the matches with a limited number of overs.
Regarding the upcoming World Cup in October/November, Azam said, "Pakistan has proven themselves to be a good white-ball team and this series provides us with the ideal launching pad to kickstart our World Cup preparations.".
Last year, Azam's team won eight out of nine one-day internationals, including a 2-1 series victory over a strong Australia at home.
Azam expressed confidence in the team's performance in the upcoming series: "We are a well-rounded side with solid batters and bowlers who have repeatedly proven themselves.".
Shaheen Shah Afridi, Pakistan's spearhead for pace, will be missed while he recovers from a knee injury he suffered in November of last year. Shadab Khan, Pakistan's all-round spinner, will also be sidelined due to a recent finger fracture.
Both the opening batsman Fakhar Zaman and the recently recalled Haris Sohail will improve the batting.
The 2019 World Cup runner-up, New Zealand, won ten of their 16 One-Day Internationals last year and has a potent team led by Kane Williamson.
With 12 victories out of the last 15 ODIs between the two teams, they have been a tyrannical force against Pakistan.
After giving up the Test captaincy, Williamson is now focusing on the World Cup.
With two World Cups coming up in 2023 and 2024, he said last month, "I felt that continuing to captain the white-ball formats was preferable.".
The skilled batter recognized Pakistan's benefits.
Pakistan is a very powerful side and naturally understands these circumstances very well, according to Williamson.
"For us as a team, the goal is to put forth some improved performances while concentrating on the cricket we want to play. ".
Due to an abdominal strain sustained on the final day of the tied second Test, New Zealand pacer Matt Henry will also miss the ODI season. Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson, and Adam Milne, who make up the pace trio, are already absent for a variety of reasons.
The final two games are on Wednesday and Friday, both in Karachi.
Kane Williamson (captain), Tom Latham, Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Henry Shipley, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, and Blair Tickner are the members of New Zealand's team.
The following players represent Pakistan: Babar Azam (captain), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Haris Sohail, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim, Naseem Shah, Agha Salman, Shahnawaz Dahani, Shan Masood, Tayyab Tahir, and Usam.
